Today we did an experiment exploring how the vibrations of sounds work. We made telephones using string and paper cups to have conversations with each other over a longer distance. We discovered the string needed to be taut for the vibrations to travel (and had lots of fun too)!
This term we have been learning all about sound and we made our very own instruments.
Have a look at the smoothies we designed and made in class today. They were pretty yummy and healthy too! Thank you to parents and carers for all the generous donations of fruit, juices, blenders and chopping boards.
Cricket - year 3!
We have some special visitors coming on Monday to teach year 3 all about cricket! Please remember your PE kits on Monday and Tuesday next week.
New 'added extras have been set for this week based on what we have been learning in class. Congratulations to Jago who scored an incredible 467 Doodle Stars last week and also to Areeba and Bodhi who are at numbers 2 and 3 on the leaderboard for last week!
Don't forget that weekly maths homework is being set on Doodle Maths - login to see the 'added extras' which Mr Desmond has set! Well done to those children who are logging in every day - little and often really helps! If you need help logging on, please pop in and I will be happy to show you how to get logged on. We have some amazing streaks (consecutive days on DoodleMaths) - well done to Bodhi with an incredible 36 days in a row!
PE this term
Our PE lessons this term will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tuesday will be outdoors and we will be playing netball! For all year 3 children in Woodpeckers and some year 4 children, Wednesday's lesson will be swimming. For all other children, it will be dance. Please remember your kit!
Wow Woodpeckers! What an amazing set of exhibits for our Book Emporium. Thank you to all the children and adults at home for all your hard work and to the parents and visitors who came to find out all about the books we love!
Have a look at what we got up to last week!
Maths home learning - NEW!
Please see the information below about something new we are trying in 34AD. Every child has a login to an online maths program called Doodle Maths. Rather than one larger piece of maths homework each week, we would like children to login daily to complete a small number of maths questions. We hope that your children find it fun, engaging and a helpful way to revise concepts learned in school.
Maths home learning - due in Tuesday 30th January
This week's maths homework is all about perimeter!
Here are some snaps from our hockey lesson and our computing lesson, where we were learning about simulations and why they are useful!
Maths homework - due in Tuesday 23rd January
This week's maths homework is to spend 30 minutes practising times tables on Times Tables Rockstars! The logins have been sent home this week and the time you spend will be really useful when we start learning about fractions and decimals in the next few weeks.
Read all about it!
Find the first edition of our new CCJ newspaper by following this link. We'll post something new every week!

Maths homework - due in Tuesday 9th January
Here is this week's maths homework. You should try to use the bus stop method if you are confident. You can also draw the problem using place value counters to help if you need to. Remember that some answers may include remainders!
See a selection of our Christmas acrostic poems. Merry Christmas to everyone in Woodpeckers and all their families and friends. See you in 2018!
Division in action!
Today we learned all about short division and used place value counters to help us understand what happens when we have remainders!
Look what we made!
Have a look at our fantastic Christmas decorations which we made to decorate our classroom for advent! Every child made one and will be bringing them home at the end of term to decorate living rooms across Downend. They looked so good we even put some up in the Lower Band area, where you can also see some of our excellent home learning projects including some amazing advent calendars.

Change to PE days for term 2
Woodpeckers will now be doing PE every Monday and Tuesday. We will be playing table tennis indoors on Mondays and tag rugby outside on Tuesdays. Remember that PE kits need to be in on both days!
I love maths - and I really enjoy getting stuck into a tricky problem. As we have been discussing in Woodpecker class, we learn best when we challenge ourselves. Sometimes we won't get the answer straight away - perseverance is an important skill in life. Have a go at this challenge to get you thinking - if you need a paper copy, ask Mr Desmond in class. Bring in your ideas to show the rest of the class!
Each week, children in the Lower Band are given 10 spellings to learn plus two extra spellings from the statutory list of words that all children should be able to spell by the end of year 4. The children then work together in pairs (spellings buddies, or spuddies!) to see which spellings they can confidently spell and which they still need to work on. All learners are unique and there are a variety of different approaches to learning spellings - what works well for one learner may not work for another and vice versa! Take a look at the document below, which is full of suggestions for different strategies for learning spellings.
Reading at home
Every child in Woodpecker class has been given a yellow reading record which should be used to record reading at home. We recommend reading at least three times a week at home, but the more the better!
We will be running a competition in our class to see how many books you can read at home between now and the end of term. Ask an adult at home to listen to you read and sign your reading record so we can see how many books you manage to get through! :)
Follow this link for some great tips for your parents on how to help you with your reading at home.
Woodpecker class elections 2017!
This week, everyone in Woodpecker class had the opportunity to volunteer to become a school councillor, eco rep or worship monitor and we voted in class to choose who we thought would do a great job. Congratulations to all of those who were lucky enough to be selected.
School Councillors: Esme and Bodhi
Worship Monitors: Ted and Amelia
Eco Reps: Alfie and Jamie
A mysterious discovery
This week, Woodpecker class received a strange letter from Professor Jones, an archaeologist who discovered something unusual in the school grounds...
Luckily, our team of adventurous Woodpeckers went to discover some of the strange findings for themselves. We worked out that we must have discovered some kind of Stone Age settlement!
PE kit - 07/09/17
Our first PE lesson will be tomorrow (Thursday 7th September). Please make sure your child brings their PE kit in - they should hang it on their peg in the cloakroom.
Our normal PE days are every Tuesday and Thursday.
On our first day in Woodpecker class, we each set ourselves a goal to achieve this year. Here are just a few of the fantastic ideas...
Meet the teacher
Hello! My name is Mr Desmond and I am the teacher for year 3 and 4 pupils in Woodpecker Class. Working alongside me this year is the wonderful Mrs Payne. Please do drop by and say hello – you will find us in the playground at the beginning and end of every day.
This is my first term here at Christ Church Junior and I am excited to be joining such a vibrant and caring school community. In my most recent role before joining Christ Church, I was responsible for raising attainment in years 5 and 6 so I know how important years 3 and 4 are as a foundation for later success. I am looking forward to getting to know all the children in my new class and supporting them with their learning so they can reach their full potential.
Outside school, I enjoy travelling, cycling, reading and cooking. I believe everyone should have something they are aiming to do; this week in Woodpeckers we will all be setting ourselves a goal to achieve this year. Mine is to try to cycle to school rather than drive. Perhaps my new class can remind me to keep going even when it starts getting cold and grey!
Learning should be fun and inspiring and we certainly have an exciting term ahead. Come back to our class page in the next few weeks for more information about our topic ‘Could you live in the Stone Age?’ and also about our brilliant year 4 camp, which is taking place at the end of September.
I look forward to meeting you all during the next few weeks.
Welcome to Woodpecker Class!
Visit this page regularly to find out more about your child's learning. Watch out for updates during the next few weeks!
We look forward to welcoming children to our new class at 8:45am on Monday 4th September.
