Walk to School 2017-18

All this year we are working with Living Streets and the WOW Walk to School challenge. This is where every child is asked every day to record how they traveled to school using the interactive web based tool. At the end of each month, if they have managed to actively travel (walk, park and stride, bike or scoot) at least three times every week, they then are awarded a special badge. This year, all the badges have the theme of the Americas.

The mascot is Strider, who has come into school several times to promote the scheme and will be doing a special walk to school event from the Co-op car park on Monday 8th January - see letter below!

Dear Parents/Carers

Introducing a Park and Stride site for families of Christ Church Infants and Juniors pupils

As you may be aware, our school encourages pupils and their families to walk to school and enjoy the many benefits this simple act brings through our participating in the WOW Walk to School Challenge.

Walking to school helps children feel happier and healthier and even do better in class because they arrive refreshed, fit and ready to learn. And more families walking means fewer cars on the road during the school run, helping to reduce congestion and pollution at the school gates.

We understand that not all children are able to walk the whole way to school due to distance, family work commitments or a variety of other reasons. One way in which we hope to help is by setting up agreed Park and Stride sites. This is a simple idea where families can park their car a 5-10 minute walk from school and then walk the rest of the way.

We have agreed with the Co-op in Downend that parents can use their car park to park and then walk to and from school.  This location is an 8 minute walk from the schools.

We will be launching this site by walking to school with Strider (the Walk to School mascot) on Monday 8th of January at 8.30am.  All children who come along to the Park & stride site will receive a special WOW badge.

If this is not suitable parking places we encourage you to choose another place 5 to 10 minutes away from the school gates and walk the rest of the way.  A copy of the school’s Walking Zone map is overleaf and will also be put on the school website.

Please note that the Park & Stride mode of transport which earns children their WOW badges must be over 5 minutes walking.  Children parking within the 5 minute zone will be considered as travelling to school by car for the WOW badge challenge.

Thank you for your continuing support. We hope you find using the Park and Stride scheme helpful. If you have any questions regarding the scheme please get in touch.

Thank you!
